Yeah. Compound this with corporate cultures approaching the resemblance of Dilbert and you're in for some real fun.
It is a source of frustration to me when we in IT do not think systemically and instead just look for a quick outcome.
(btw, I love your work Kendal. I look fwd to digging in to your "Disk Performance Hands On" series when I have the time.)

Great post! Couldn't agree more.
Short-term fixes ("band-aids") may be needed to keep production rolling (reduce or avoid outages) until a long-term fix (identify and resolve root cause of problem) is implemented. The root cause resolution is always needed, and sometimes can be used directly (without a "band-aid" fix) if the root cause can be IDed and resolved quick enough.

I agree completely, but I'd like to add, document your solution! This is an ongoing problem for our IT section. The same section of printers wants to disappear off the chart once a month on a Sunday. So the entire radiology dept is running one eye blind until the wkend IT guy calls in Mr. Doesn't Document from the other side of the state and we wait for his glorious arrival. Bitter? Yes.
Kendal, I agree in part. Definitely it's important to distinguish between fixes and bandaids, and whenever possible, a fix is of course the better alternative.
But...it's not always so simple. Sometimes it's just not worth the dollars it would take to do the real fix. In the case of someone spending a day a week rebooting servers, clearly that's incurring another cost, which would lead me to find a way to simplify that or get it closer to the top of the stack of things to fix.
One thing I'd suggest is asking mgmt to explain why they don't want to do the "real" fix. Maybe you'll get a Dilbert answer, maybe you'll see things from another perspective, maybe you'll realize you didn't present your case well.

Distinguishing fixing and band-aiding is subject to many parameters, and as you know -- it does not always happen in IT and operations, but also in management, document processing, client management, marketing etc.
For example, vacuum cleaning versus instructing people not to dust around might be considered band-aiding versus a fix, but would not be correct to do so.
Even Microsoft and some IBM and other giants tell their millions of clients to bear with them for some months and avoid using the buggy feature or pressing the button, before the SP* will be released.
It's the reality. I won't even talk about money part of the problem and project-type software development
