It's a great point... on a short 3-day trip out to the coast, Paul and I met a couple who turned out to know (very well, in fact) the gentleman that actually introduced us (talk about small world). And, on a dive boat last summer we met a couple that we're going to stay with in NYC for a couple of days in December.
Making connections can be business, short term or life long BUT networking (and especially following through) is a tough skill. Even without cards, jot down their name/email and FOLLOW THROUGH! That's the really tough part and the skill that's hard to learn (I usually make notes on the back of their card after I meet them - so that I really remember the exact context!).
I totally agree keep those notes/cards handy cause you never know what you're gonna get! Life is like a box of chocolates!!
